Work
what is inside the box?
After a voyage to pluto in Think Beyond AW18 and a joyful time spent at Otto’s Backyard in Recreation SS19, Pawk and Barn of Monkeys come together once again to explore the vast world that is the mind in Inside The Box AW19.
The work won a recommendation of the renowed Milk Magazine for Best Kid's Lookbook.
Part One
BRAIN LEFT HEMISPHERE
THE CONCEPT
The brain is the most complex part of the human being and at the same time the most unknown. Between biology and philosophy, we had to put some structural order into these 80 billion neurons. Thus, we propose to explore the component with the most potential for visual expression, functionality, dividing the brain into four main functions.
Since one of the main functions of the brain is logic, related to the strategic and analytical side of each individual, we intended to explore this idea in a very structural way by using geometric shapes in the scenario, with different colours and sizes, focusing on the difference in scale between the child and the set.
Through optical illusion, colours, distortions and the exploration of certain poses of the models with the objects of the space, we approached the idea of senses, inspired by the nervous system, from which the brain is the main organ, processing the physical world into the mind and allowing the information to be interpreted.
Inspired by the limbic system of the brain as the part responsible for emotions and social behaviours, we intended to visually explore emotions using fluid materials and round objects. Allowing the models to interact with a space with softer lines and encouraging the bonding between the children through the selection of poses used.
Lastly, taking as inspiration the complex mechanism that commands the archive and retrieval of our experiences, we seemed to explore the idea of memory as something nonlinear and structural through the use of visual paradoxes, as for example, frames without paintings and stairs that lead nowhere.
Part Two
BRAIN RIGHT HEMISPHERE
THE MAKING
After defining our concept and planning the visual ideas for each one of the sets, we started the production process. The art direction team created two steel structures that would serve as base of construction to put up walls when needed or for suspending the geometric items from the ceiling. A lot of plywood was used to construct walls, geometric shapes and also floors that were used in one of the sets. We also used coloured paints inspired by the collection’s colour palette to paint the shapes, walls and some other details. Some sets we had to do a lot of tests and experimentation till we got the desired result, which made this part of the process a very fun one to work on.
All sets were created by PAWK WORKSHOP, a company of the PAWK family, which was born to bring an art direction service to the creative industry. They create sets, objects and clothing in a close relationship with the vision of creative directors.
